ABOUT BOTOX
One of the most popular cosmetic treatments in spas and plastic surgery offices is BOTOX Cosmetic wrinkle relaxer. BOTOX is an injectable treatment that works deep in the skin layer to prevent or correct the formation of wrinkles. BOTOX is performed in our Virden MD practice next door. The procedure is a relatively quick treatment with little to no downtime afterwards. BOTOX is an ideal treatment for dynamic wrinkles, the type that form along areas of the face that crease and wrinkle due to the muscle contractions involved in facial expressions. Over time, as the skin loses elasticity, these repeated muscle contractions permanently crease the skin. With Botox, these muscle contractions are limited, which helps smooth the skin laying over the muscle. BEST CANDIDATES
The best candidates for BOTOX wrinkle relaxer treatments:
- Have moderate to severe dynamic lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows (frown lines), or on the forehead
- Want to temporarily halt muscle activity responsible for wrinkling
- Desire short-term results
- Desire natural-looking results
- Want to avoid surgery or invasive cosmetic procedures
WHAT TO EXPECT
Prior to receiving a wrinkle relaxer like BOTOX, the injector will thoroughly assess a patient’s face to determine the correct dosage and the most appropriate site(s) to inject. BOTOX is administered through fine needles and treatments usually don’t require numbing. One treatment takes around 30 – 45 minutes, depending on the patient’s condition. Treatments are usually needed every few months.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
There’s no downtime associated with wrinkle relaxers, so patients can go about their normal routine after a treatment. Common side effects are a slight stinging sensation, mild redness, and swelling that may last up to 4 – 7 days after treatment. BOTOX results can last around 3 – 6 months as the muscles relax and the skin is able flatten. Patients should ask about when to schedule their next appointment to prevent their wrinkles from re-appearing.
