Research microneedling and you may have a list of questions. Between the results, the redness, and the recovery, there’s a lot to understand before you book your first session. One question we often hear at our med spa is, how long do results actually last?
Good news is that microneedling is one of those treatments that genuinely delivers. It’s minimally invasive, works for many skin concerns, and the results build over time. The end result is a completely natural look. But like any treatment, knowing what to expect going in makes the whole experience that much better.
How Long Does Microneedling Last?
Here’s the short answer and it isn’t definitive: it depends on how many sessions you do and how well you take care of your skin afterward. A single microneedling treatment can deliver results that last anywhere from three to five months. Most people who complete a full series consisting of around three to six sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart see improvements that hold up for over a year.
Microneedling works by creating tiny, controlled micro-injuries in your skin that kick your body’s natural collagen and elastin production into gear. Because the results come from your own body’s healing process, things like your age, skin condition, how exposed you are to the sun, and your post-treatment skincare routine all play a role in how long results last. The better you treat your skin after treatment, the longer you have to enjoy them.
How Long Does Microneedling Take to Heal?
The healing time for microneedling is fairly manageable for most people, which is one of the reasons it’s become such a popular treatment. In the first day or two, you might feel like you have a mild sunburn, experiencing some redness, warmth, and maybe a little swelling. By days three and four, you might notice some light flaking or tightness as your skin sheds its top layer. This is good, and it means you’re now regenerating. After around a week, you’ll feel back to normal and your daily routine can continue as usual.
How Long Does Redness Last After Microneedling?
Redness is a highly talked about side effect, but it’s not as dramatic as some people expect. It’s all part of the treatment and healing process. After around 12 to 24 hours post-treatment, the redness will start to calm down. One thing that really helps is avoiding workouts, saunas, and direct sunlight during the first two to three days after microneedling. Your skin just needs a chance to settle down.
How Long Does It Take for Microneedling to Work?
We’re asked this a lot and our best advice is to have patience. Because microneedling is stimulating collagen production from the inside out, the results build gradually rather than showing up all at once. In the first week or two, you’ll notice a nice glow and your skin will look refreshed. Around weeks three to four, you’ll notice more texture improvements and smaller pores.
Where your patience really shows up is between one and six months post-treatment. Your collagen continues to remodel and your skin keeps improving. It’s a slower process than something like filler, but the results look incredibly natural.
Maintenance Tips Post-Treatment
Getting great results is one thing, but we all know that keeping them is another. Once you’ve completed your initial sessions, maintenance sessions begin every six to twelve months. While you wait, here are some actionable tips to maintain the results from your microneedling treatment: wear SPF 30 or higher every single day; prioritize a solid skincare routine with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and retinol; stay hydrated and eat well; and get enough sleep. All of these support your skin and your healing from the inside out.
